The Lip Service Alliance is governed by a board of directors. Experts drawn across science, law, industry, communications and consumer advocacy.

Laura DiGirolamo is the founder of the Lip Service Alliance and serves on its Board of Directors. A California-barred attorney specialising in intellectual property and litigation, she has spent more than two decades in the beauty industry as an innovations expert.

Known in the industry as "The Brand Whisperer," Laura has been brought in by global brands, among them Sephora, Burberry, Unilever, Benefit Cosmetics and Lululemon, to identify the market patterns and category gaps others had missed. More than a decade before "clean beauty" existed as a language or a category, she founded LAVANILA and created the first healthy luxury deodorant. It became a precursor to the clean beauty movement and created an entirely new category, one that remains a fixture of the industry today.

The Lip Service Alliance began with a continuing legal education course on the history of cosmetic regulation. Recognising that lip products are both absorbed through mucosal tissue and ingested, and that no regulator anywhere assesses that dual pathway on lip tissue itself, Laura spent two years out of the public eye assembling scientists and regulatory experts to pressure-test and quantify what she had found.

She founded the Alliance as a 501(c)(3) to close that gap in the open. It convenes consumers, industry and regulators around modernised lip product safety standards, grounded in peer-reviewed research and anchored by a partnership with the University of Birmingham. Laura has co-authored peer-reviewed research on dual-pathway lip exposure, now under review at Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management.

She is also co-founder of YOM Beauty alongside Dr. Nora Hassas, the world's first LipSafe™ certified microplastic-free lip care brand, formulated so that every ingredient is food grade certified. YOM was built as proof that the standard the Alliance advocates is commercially achievable. That relationship is disclosed in the Alliance's formation documents, and she observes recusal obligations under its bylaws.

Laura holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. She is admitted to the bar in California.

John Milligan is President of the Lip Service Alliance and serves on its Board of Directors. A cosmetic chemist by training, he has spent more than three decades in product development and manufacturing leadership on both sides of the Atlantic.

John's career has been built inside mission-led beauty and personal care businesses, including The Body Shop, Autumn Harp, Twincraft Skincare and Dollar Shave Club, where he led technical teams and cross-border development programmes. Those experiences have given him a working knowledge of what actually happens between a formulation brief and a finished product on a production line.

John's technical focus has been plant-based and green chemistry, microbiome health and the development of clean beauty standards that hold up to scientific scrutiny rather than marketing convenience. He is a longstanding advocate for women in science and is known for a collaborative, open-door style of leadership that brings formulators, marketers and regulatory specialists into the same conversation.

John brings the manufacturing perspective the Alliance needs. Any standard the Alliance advances must be achievable at scale, by real suppliers, at a cost the industry can carry. John's experience is where that gets tested. As President, he leads a board that is independent of any single commercial interest. He is currently leading the development of the Alliance's ingredient framework for lip products.

John holds a BSc (Hons) in Organic Chemistry from UMIST. He is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in the United States and the Society of Cosmetic Scientists in the United Kingdom. He is based in Middlebury, Vermont.

Iseult Lynch is Professor of Environmental Nanosciences at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, and Director of Research for the Centre for Environmental Research and Justice (CERJ). Her research focuses on understanding and mitigating the health and environmental impacts of particles, including nanomaterials and microplastics.

An internationally recognised scientific leader, Iseult works at the intersection of environmental protection, human health, sustainable innovation and regulatory science. Through leadership of major European programmes, strategic international partnerships and pioneering work in data-driven safety assessment, she has helped shape emerging approaches to the governance and sustainability of advanced materials and environmental contaminants.

She is a leading advocate for FAIR data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable), digital infrastructures and open knowledge-sharing, leading initiatives that make scientific evidence more accessible, reusable and actionable for researchers, regulators and stakeholders.

Her influence extends beyond academia into policy, regulation, infrastructure development and the training of the next generation of scientific leaders. She chairs the Hazardous Substances Advisory Committee, which provides independent expert advice on chemicals in the environment to the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and serves as Treasurer for SETAC Europe and on the Boards of Directors of SETAC Europe and SETAC Global. She sits on the editorial boards of journals including Environmental Science: Nano, Particle and Fibre Toxicology, ES&T Toxicology and Microplastics, and advises the Bernal Institute in Ireland, the NanoLund centre for nanoscience in Sweden, and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory in Portugal. She also holds a long-term research partnership with the chemoinformatics company NovaMechanics.

A champion of women in science and of public engagement in research, Iseult has long been an advocate for responsible innovation. Her former PhD students and postdocs have gone on to careers across government, industry and academia. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, an MBA, and a PhD in Chemistry focused on developing biomaterials for medical applications such as controlled drug delivery.

Darin Olien is co-host of the Emmy Award-winning, number one Netflix docu-series Down to Earth with Zac Efron, and a superfood hunter who has spent nearly twenty years travelling the planet in search of underutilised exotic foods and medicinal plants.

That fieldwork became a business. Darin co-developed Shakeology, which has grossed over $4 billion in sales since 2008 for Beachbody, and went on to found Barukas, producers of the most nutrient-dense nut in the world, sourced sustainably from the Cerrado savanna of Brazil. Through regenerative business practices, Barukas is committed to planting 20 million baru trees while sharing one of the most delicious and sustainable nuts on the planet.

He is the author of the New York Times best-selling SuperLife: The Five Fixes That Will Keep You Healthy, Fit, and Eternally Awesome, and hosts the podcast Superlife with Darin Olien, where he explores people, solutions, and health. The show's Fatal Conveniences segment uncovers the modern-day habits quietly undermining our health and the environment, a line of inquiry that runs directly parallel to the work of the Lip Service Alliance.

Darin's advisory work centres on companies solving environmental problems at source. He is Director of Strategic Alliances and Global Health Ambassador at APPICS, a social platform monetising content through blockchain, and sits on the advisory boards of FootPrint, the largest plant-derived alternative to single-use plastic in the world, Habits of Waste, and AlphaCor, which builds zero-waste clean-energy systems designed to reverse environmental decline.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition and a Master's degree in Psychology.

Robert (Bob) Lee is Professor of Law at the University of Birmingham, Development Director for the Centre for Environmental Research and Justice (CERJ) and former Dean of the Law School. He is one of the UK's leading experts on environmental governance, regulatory innovation and sustainability policy, with influence extending from Birmingham to the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Welsh Government and United Nations agencies.

Across a career spanning academia, government and international policy, Bob has helped shape environmental legislation, advised policymakers on complex regulatory challenges, and championed evidence-based approaches to sustainability, chemical safety and environmental justice. He is recognised for building bridges between science, law, policy and industry, helping institutions navigate emerging environmental and technological challenges.

His current work positions the University of Birmingham as a leader in regulatory science, environmental justice and sustainable innovation. He is driving the implementation of new regulatory paradigms through leadership in debates around New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), precision toxicology and next-generation risk assessment, contributing to UK and European discussions on how regulation can support innovation while protecting both human health and the environment.

Bob is a trusted adviser to the European Parliament, the European Commission, the House of Commons and Senedd Cymru on environmental governance and regulation. He is Environmental Editor of the Journal of Business Law, Analysis Editor of the Journal of Environmental Law, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Law and Society. His long-standing influence on environmental policy in Wales dates back to his co-directorship of the ESRC BRASS Centre at Cardiff University. He is the former Director of Birmingham's Centre for Employability, Professional Legal Education and Research (CEPLER), Special Adviser to Landmark Information Group, and Chair of Landmark Academy.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Doctor of Laws, is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, and has appeared in Who's Who for the past fifteen years.

Susan R. Arnold serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors of the Lip Service Alliance. An entertainment attorney and certified mediator, her thirty-year career has sat at the intersection of law, business and human relations.

For three decades Susan was the legal architect behind some of the most recognisable music synchronisation deals in the world, licensing music into advertising campaigns, film and television, digital platforms, consumer products and gaming. As Senior Vice President of Creative Marketing Business Affairs at Sony Music Publishing, she directed global synchronisation licensing before retiring from the company. At EMI Entertainment World she led licensing operations, negotiating $80 million annually in outbound synchronisation agreements. Earlier, at Sony Music Entertainment, she ran Product and Copyright Licensing and Administration, managing a team of more than twenty and licensing all music for Sony Music's US releases.

In 2004 she founded Arnold Resolution, a private mediation practice built around the conflicts most people consider intractable. As a certified mediator and arbitrator she works with individuals, couples, business partners, family businesses and band members in dispute, taking cases through area courts, community centres, the American Arbitration Association and private referral. Her approach is less about reaching settlement than about building a workable path forward for relationships that have broken down.

That combination of legal precision and conflict resolution extends into leadership development. Susan is a certified trainer, mentor and coach through the Institute of Leadership and Management and the Great Place to Work Institute, with experience spanning executive leadership, employee development and organisational change.

She holds a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Communications Studies from New York University, where she graduated Cum Laude. She is admitted to the bar in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

David A. Montgomery is a decorated British military veteran awarded the Military Cross (MC) - one of the United Kingdom's highest honours for gallantry in combat - for leading counter-terrorist operations on the battlefield during his service in UK Special Forces.

Over 23 years of military service, David served 6 years in the British Royal Marines before joining the United Kingdom Special Forces (UKSF) - Special Boat Service (SBS) for 17 years, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer, Class 1. He completed 10 operational tours spanning Counter Insurgency (COIN), Internal Security, Counter Narcotics (CN), Maritime Interdiction (MI), War Fighting and Peace Enforcement Operations, demonstrating expertise across the full spectrum of special operations.

Following his military career in 2010, David transitioned to the private security sector, founding and serving as director of a security risk management company. His leadership has encompassed everything from executive protection to managing complex security operations in challenging and unstable environments worldwide.

In recent years, David has conducted high-risk close protection assignments across Ukraine, the Middle East, Africa and the United Kingdom, including specialised work supporting news media agencies operating throughout the Levant region.

David's specialised military training includes Battlefield Trauma Medic, Combat Communicator and Executive Protection specialist, with operational medical experience across multiple continents. His commitment to continuous learning extends beyond the battlefield; he holds a Master of Arts in Military History from the University of Birmingham and a Diploma in Security Risk & Crisis Management.

Based on the South Coast of England, David maintains the discipline and fitness standards that defined his military career while pursuing his passion for military history.
